The traditional season opener for the Mens 1s and 2s become an even contest despite reservations from some of the players. Late drop outs from both teams saw the 1s decide to play with 10 men, whilst the 2s drafted in a couple of players from the Ladies to boost their numbers.
As expected the 1s dominated possession against the lower team, playing the ball around nicely if a little slowly. When they did try to push through the defensive ranks of the 2s they found a sturdy block was never far away as Stu Southworth, John Davidson, Chris Gregory and Richard Bertram made plenty of last ditch tackles. Behind them they found the equally resilient Gary Watson in fine form.
Playing through the midfield was not easy either with Zoe McCosh and Sarah Turnbull giving the 1s no time at all in the middle of the park.
Level at the break the deadlock was broken shortly into the 2nd half as Eli Stephenson finally found some space before calmly slotting past the advancing keeper. Normal service was resumed afterwards before a late short corner from Lewis Johnson found its way into the net via a deflection
